Imagine: Infinite possibilities, a flood of inspiration and the power of training like an athlete.

As professional creatives, we seek inspiration everywhere and staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends is crucial. So I jumped at the chance to attend the Birmingham Design Conference, a biennial event where I could immerse myself in all elements of the creative world, from typographers to puppet masters, that left me brimming with creative energy.
My second year at the Birmingham Design Festival/Conference (depends which year you go), I know what to expect – but every year I leave more in awe of the inspiring careers the keynote speakers have led and the talent they exude.
As one of the speakers Gemma O'Brien highlighted Birmingham gets a bad rep, when in fact Birmingham has always been a hub of creativity made better by an incredibly sunny day and the bustle of people soaking up the sun. The conference, organised by Luke Tongue and his incredibly hard working team, showcases the latest trends, technologies, and ideas in the design world. The conference brings together renowned speakers, industry experts, and passionate creatives under one roof, fostering an environment ripe for learning, collaboration, and personal growth.
When I arrived at “The Rep” it was a designer's dream, the vibrant energy and all the display areas dotted around, from books to design products, prototypes, and interactive installations, each embodying the creative spirit of its creators. From cutting-edge virtual reality experiences to sustainable design solutions like, packaging made from seaweed – every stand offered a unique perspective on the future of design.
One of the highlights of the Birmingham Design Conference was undoubtedly the lineup of inspiring speakers. Experts from various design disciplines took the stage, sharing their insights, experiences, and innovative approaches to problem-solving.
The keynote speakers effortlessly captivated the audience with topics ranging from user-centred design and emerging technologies to encouraging the art of play. Each of their talks left a lasting impression with me, igniting a spark of creativity and of course jotting down an inspiring quote in my notebook. So what are those quotes I hear you cry. Here are my five main takeaways:
M.i.u.a.w.g.a (Lex Fefegha)
Means making it up as you go along. Aren’t we all but we are skilled problem solvers who use our initiative and talent to succeed.- Play is agency
(Sonal Jhuj)
Global brand director at Lego stated life is difficult, definite and defined but play is fun, messy and free. She shared that with 5 lego bricks there are 915,103,765 possibilities and it's only by embracing play as a tool we live in a wonderful state where creativity is inevitable and the possibilities seem endless. - Ultra Artist
(Gemma O’Brien)
The playfully self christened Mrs Eaves (look it up) Australian Typographer and Artist compared being an artist to preparing for an Ultra Marathon. You have to love it and it takes time and training and an understanding of your craft to keep generating ideas and works that keep not only others but yourself inspired. - “We are no more than the stories we are told, the stories told about us, and the stories we tell”
(Oliver Jeffers)
Now I won’t lie to you, I’ve seen Oliver Jeffers speak before at OFFSET 2014 but WOW, what an inspiring man! An observer, an explorer and deeply interested in time and space, is what inspires his craft. He encouraged us to dig deep and always ask the why behind the why, and in the end what inspires us is all around us. - Leave time to refine
(Toby Olié)
We all know it but do we practise it? Puppet Director extraordinaire explained how sometimes we think we have an incredible idea and it's not until it's in situ that we fully understand its function, he advised, always test your work in place, whether it’s a puppet or a OOH ad first, then refine as you test.
The Birmingham Design Conference 2023, was a celebration of creativity in all its forms. The fusion of art, technology, and innovation was palpable throughout the event, pushing the boundaries of what design can achieve. I left invigorated and brimming with fresh perspectives. It reinforced the importance of continuous learning and staying ahead of the curve in this ever-evolving industry.
Whether you're a seasoned professional or an aspiring designer, if you're passionate about design and seeking a creative boost, I highly recommend attending design conferences like this one. It reaffirmed the power of design to shape our world and left me with a renewed passion for my craft. Prepare to be inspired, challenged, and invigorated as you immerse yourself in a world of creativity and innovation.
I am grateful to Finn for supporting my attendance at this incredible conference and can't wait to implement the new ideas and insights gained on our upcoming projects.
One final note, as Sonal Jhuj instructed, don't forget to take those opportunities and “play on the grass”.
